India to airlift its citizens stuck in blockade-hit Qatar from next week




Civil Aviation Minister said, India will run special flights for its citizens to return from Qatar, which has been hit by travel and trade boycott by other gulf nations. The flights will be operated from June 25-28.

Civil aviation ministry sources said, “External affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had talked to minister of civil aviation Ashok Gajapathi Raju on June 19 and they had discussed operating additional flights to Doha for Indian nationals who were not able to get bookings but needed to reach the country back from Doha. Accordingly, the ministry had taken up the issue with concerned airlines.

It has been decided that the following additional flights shall be operated  Trivandrum-Doha, Doha-Cochin-Trivandrum sector on Boeing 737 (186 seater) from 25th June to 8th July 2017 by Air India Express (and) Mumbai-Doha-Mumbai on 22nd and 23rd June 2017 by Jet Airways (168 seater).
The minister of civil aviation has conveyed that all necessary steps for timely movement of Indian National  from Qatar shall be ensured.

The trade and travel boycott on Qatar was imposed by the countries based on several differences.
Earlier Seven countries including Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt and Bahrain, had boycotted Qatar and banned use of their airspace for any flight that flew from or was meant to land in Qatar. After some time, the embargo was revised. According to news agency reports, the restrictions on the use of airspace were imposed while nine countries severed diplomatic ties with Qatar

There are around seven lakh Indians who live in Qatar who go abroad for employment & popular designations and a large section of the population is from the healthcare and infrastructure sectors.
